Professional qualifications
Dr. Cotugno has made a lifelong commitment to the care and treatment of children, adolescents, families, and adults. He has been providing group and individual psychotherapy services for over thirty years to individuals and families who exhibit high stress, worries, school concerns, social issues, and behavior problems. This includes children described as learning and attention disordered, developmentally disabled, and autism spectrum disordered. His training and experiences in clinical, educational, and school-based interventions at the University of California at Berkeley, McLean Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital, have consistently emphasized understanding and treating the individual within his or her own social environment and context.
Dr. Cotugno has directed and consulted on the creation, development, and enhancement of comprehensive assessment, evaluation, and treatment services for special needs children in a variety of different hospital, clinic, school, and community settings. His ongoing research and writings relating to learning, attention, and developmental disabled children have emphasized and utilized cognitive-developmental theories, individual and group therapy approaches, and skill-based instruction.
Dr. Cotugno's teaching, supervising, and consulting have provided opportunities to train, inform, and collaborate with professionals, trainees, and students working on the cutting edge of innovative, effective, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and interventions.
